Dental sealants, or pit and fissure sealants, have been around since the 1970s, and have a proven track record for effectiveness. Sealants are barriers to cavities: they coat the chewing surfaces of your teeth—specifically the molars and premolars—which sit in the back of the mouth and because of their location, are hard to brush and floss properly, making them prone to cavities.

Because the molars are flat on the top, they get fissures and grooves from chewing and biting which makes it easy for harmful bacteria and sticky plaque to hide in. Sealants seal out bacteria, plaque, and food particles that would otherwise make these fissures their home and lead to dental caries.

Our dentist applies sealants in just one easy visit, and it is a painless procedure. The sealant is a thin plastic coating painted onto chewing surfaces of the back teeth. After our dentist paints the sealant on the tooth enamel, it bonds to the tooth while it hardens. The resin can be slightly tinted, white or clear. Our dentist will check the sealants during regular cleaning visits to make sure they are crack-free, and still keeping out bacteria and oral debris. Typically, sealants last anywhere from 5-7 years, but can last up to 10 years if properly cared for and intact (no cracks and fissures in the sealant). While sealants are usually used on children and teenagers, adults who are cavity prone and have molars with no cavities or fillings are also viable candidates for sealants.
