If you are afraid to smile because your teeth have lost their brightness, you are not alone. Tooth discoloration is a common problem, and can stem from a variety of issues including time, the foods you eat and drink, your genetics, and boil down to whether your stains are intrinsic or extrinsic. But what does that even mean?

Intrinsic Stains

Intrinsic stains stem from whatever is going on inside the tooth. Tooth decay, taking certain medications such as tetracycline, over fluoridation (known as fluorosis), a chipped or broken tooth which has darkened from deadened nerves, or having a dark amalgam filling in the tooth.

Extrinsic Stains

Extrinsic stains are surface stains caused by factors on the outside of the tooth. These are caused by factors such as eating or drinking tooth-staining foods such as coffee, tea, or wine, smoking or chewing tobacco, and poor oral hygiene habits.
