While accidents do happen, there are some precautions you can take to avoid damaging your pearly whites. For example, avoid chewing hard candy, popcorn kernels and ice. If you are tempted to use your teeth as tools, such as scissors to open packaging, please don’t! And when participating in sports, wearing a mouthguard can offer excellent protection.  But in the event the following tooth issue occur, there are some things you can do to care for your smile before you are seen by our dentist.

-Toothache: If you have a toothache, first, rinse your mouth with warm water. Then, carefully floss any food that might be in the tooth. If the pain doesn’t go away, be sure to come in and see our dentist.

-Knocked out tooth: If you have lost a permanent tooth, the important thing is to keep it moist. Before you can get in to be seen, it is best to place it back in the socket (avoid handling the root), if possible. The next best thing is to put it in between the cheek and gums, or a container of milk, or in a tooth preservation product which has been approved by the ADA on the label.

-Cracked tooth: If you have cracked your tooth, be sure to rinse your mouth with warm water and place a cold compress on the face to minimize swelling. Make an appointment with our dentist as soon as possible.
