Skipping your six month dental checkup is bad for you for a variety of reasons. Regular dental checkups matter because we not only clean your teeth, but spot any potential dental health problems early on when treatment is most effective and also least costly. Typically, your checkup involves two parts; examining your mouth and surrounding area and cleaning the teeth and gums.

At the beginning of your visit, we will examine you for cavities and locate where the plaque and tartar is accumulating. Plaque—that sticky bacterial film you can feel when you run your tongue along your teeth—needs to be removed daily or it will mineralize and require professional dental tools to remove. If tartar does buildup and you avoid professional dental cleanings, it can result in tooth decay and gum disease.

Your gum health will also be evaluated to make sure the gums are healthy and spaced correctly around your teeth. Spaces between the teeth and gums increase with gum disease. Your smile will also be checked for unhealthy oral conditions and will review any treatment necessary based on the dental conditions we uncover.

In the next part of your checkup we will clean your teeth and gums. Using scaling tools, we will remove all tartar buildup from your teeth and gumline. To remove stains on the teeth, they will be polished with a gritty paste after scaling. Once the teeth are squeaky clean we will floss to make sure they are free from debris between the teeth and along the gumline, as well as review brushing and flossing techniques to help you take the best care possible of your teeth.

In addition to keeping six month dental checkups with our team, we recommend that you keep your smile fresh with diligent daily at-home care: brushing your teeth at least two times a day for two minutes each session, flossing at least once a day and finally, following up with a plaque-eliminating mouthwash.
